CSA [full season] week #5
In the box this week:
rainbow Swiss chard
sorrel
Tuscan kale
bok choy
garlic
snow peas
basil
lemon mint
summer squash.
Crazy heat! New this week is the start of the summer squash. I'd suggest chocolate zucchini cake but it's too hot to even think of baking. Try them sliced in half and grilled with a brushing of olive oil. Also, some baby bok choy - a bit damaged by the bugs (I don't spray the greens since we eat the entire plant!) but a good rinsing in cold water (or dunked in salt water for 15 minutes) should get rid of any hitchhikers. Try them stir-fryed with the garlic - mixed with other greens?

CSA [full season] week #3
In the box this week:
green onions
garlic tops/bulbils
baby fennel
sorrel
dinosaur kale
rainbow Swiss chard
fava beans,
radish pods
snow peas
lavender
lemon mint
What do you do with fava beans and radish pods?
Fresh fava beans need to be removed from their pod (the pod is inedible) and here are some recipe ideas: http://www.seasonalchef.com/recipe0506b.htm
Radish pods? The unusual hot weather made all the radishes bolt and go to seed - and the pods are the immature seeds that still have the flavor and heat of the root. Add them to salads, stir-frys, or make a pickle with them. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/08/09/AR2006080900474.html.

CSA [full season] week #2
*Finally* planted the tomato plants in yesterday's cool weather, all 2,000+! Some of the cherry varieties should be ripe by the end of July - but I did plant a few plants a few weeks ago and I'm hoping they ripen a little earlier. Most of the beans, summer squash, cucumbers, and okra are planted and I'm adding little sections of basil(s), camomile, nasturtiums, Swiss chard, daikon radishes, etc, every week.
What strange weather we've been having. It's been a hot and dry streak for a few weeks. I can irrigate for the dry weather but the heat still gets to me despite the low humidity. Even the weeds hold on in the heat of the day!
In the box this week:
mustard greens
Lacinato (Tuscan/Dinosaur) kale
green onions
snow peas
fresh lavender
lemon balm
hardneck garlic
"Zlata" golden radishes (hot/dry weather makes radishes a little hotter!)
French Breakfast radishes
